To start developing native, cross-platform .NET apps on macOS, install Visual Studio 2019 for Mac following the steps below.

Requirements

  • A Mac with macOS High Sierra 10.13 or above.

To build Xamarin apps for iOS or macOS, you'll also need:

Download Visual Studio Code for macOS. Open the browser's download list and locate the downloaded archive. Select the 'magnifying glass' icon to open the archive in Finder. Drag Visual Studio Code.app to the Applications folder, making it available in the macOS Launchpad. When you download Visual Studio for Mac, you’ll always get the Community edition by default.   • Xcode 10.0 or above. The latest stable version is usually recommended.
  • An Apple ID. If you don't have an Apple ID already you can create a new one at https://appleid.apple.com. It's necessary to have an Apple ID for installing and signing into Xcode.

Installation instructions

  1. Download the installer from the Visual Studio for Mac download page.

  2. Once the download is complete, click the VisualStudioforMacInstaller.dmg to mount the installer, then run it by double-clicking the arrow logo:

  3. You may be presented with a warning about the application being downloaded from the Internet. Click Open.

  4. Wait while the installer checks your system:

  5. An alert will appear asking you to acknowledge the privacy and license terms. Follow the links to read them, then press Continue if you agree:

  6. The list of available workloads is displayed. Select the components you wish to use:

  7. After you have made your selections, press the Install button.

  8. The installer will display progress as it downloads and installs Visual Studio for Mac and the selected workloads. You will be prompted to enter your password to grant the privileges necessary for installation.:

  9. Once installed, Visual Studio for Mac will prompt you to personalize your installation by signing in and selecting the key bindings that you'd like to use:

If you chose not to install a platform or tool during the original installation (by unselecting it in step #6), you must run the installer again if you wish to add the components later.

Debug Blazor WebAssembly projects

Visual Studio for Mac now includes full support for debugging Blazor WebAssembly projects, giving you the option to set breakpoints, watches, navigate your code using step and skip commands, and more.

Note

This release of Visual Studio for Mac now supports running on the macOS Big Sur developer beta builds. If you're already on Big Sur and can't use the updater, visit the Visual Studio for Mac website and download the installer.

  • The F# editor and language service have been updated to use the same backend as Visual Studio (Windows). This fixes a number of issues previously reported on Developer Community including:
    • F# multiply operator as a function wrongly affects color of code after.
    • F# 4.7 language features don't work.
    • Undo doesn't work.
    • Three double quotation marks are placed instead of two.
    • F# 4.7 isn't supported.
    • Editor fails on matching quote insertion.
  • We fixed an issue causing the default key binding for 'Navigate To..' to no longer work with the French keyboard.

  • We fixed an issue where adding an Apple account for Xamarin.iOS is broken.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in failure to add an Apple developer account with two step authentication.
  • We fixed an issue preventing pairing with Visual Studio.
  • We fixed an issue where the Storyboard editor would not start.

Known Issues

The following is a list of all existing known issues in Visual Studio 2019 for Mac version 8.8:

Download Vs Code On Macys

  • Loading Blazor WebAssembly projects with .NET 5.0 RC1 is not yet supported.
  • In rare cases, it's possible to be up to date with everything but the .NET Core 3.1.300 SDK. If you enter into this configuration and update to .NET Core 3.1.300 using the updater, the notification to update the .NET Core SDK will not disappear until the IDE is restarted.
  • Xamarin developers on macOS Big Sur will not be able to compile and run their projects at this time. This will be supported in an upcoming release.
